I had my seven year old take this picture of me and my intention was to keep it so that I could come back to it on days that I feel a little helpless, but then I looked at it and decided that I wanted to share it.
It looks like a picture of a woman packing up a wig, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a picture of a woman with a head full of hair putting away a wig that she wore when she felt self-conscious about being bald. It’s a picture of a woman who had her breasts taken away, her abdomen scarred deeply, her chest and neck also scarred and tampered with. A woman who lost her hair, her eyebrows, her sense of self, and really in a way lost what it was to be a woman.
Anyway, as you can see from this picture, I got my hair back, and slowly but surely I’m getting myself back. I hope every woman can see this and find some hope in it. Regardless of what you’re dealing with, one day you’ll be able to look back and say, “I made it.”
Xoxo!
